How to use Marketing Effectively

Businesses that fail probably regard marketing as gobbledygook. To survive, all organisations need a marketing strategy. It is not saying 'yes' to the next ad sales person who calls because you have something left in the budget. To be effective, that is to grow sales and increase profits, marketing must be properly planned.

Marketing is not rocket science. Here are some basic rules:

  • Clearly define your product or service.
  • Clearly describe your customers and why they should buy from you.
  • Understand that customers are only interested in what you can do for them. Talk about the benefits of buying from you before talking about you.
  • Keep it simple, especially when writing copy.
  • Always test new marketing ideas.
  • Stay in regular contact with customers - they will buy again and refer.
  • Beware of buying advertising - it can be a complete waste of cash.
  • To measure effectiveness only use direct response techniques such as direct mail, telemarketing and pay per click.
  • Adopt a lifelong learning attitude to selling. Everybody needs to sell.
